Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections have the potential to fully heal partially torn tendons to high grade tendon tears, and its efficacy appears to be comparable to surgical interventions. Previously, it was thought that surgery was the only option to repair torn tendons. But the latest studies state that PRP injections offer an exciting alternative with faster recoveries, and accelerated healing of tendon tears. PRP injections do more than just alleviate pain and reduce symptoms, they can enhance the complete healing of tendon tears. Researchers compared the results of PRP injections to surgical interventions for partial tendon tears of the rotator cuff. They proved that PRP injections had approximately 95% success rate. Additionally, the PRP group had no complications while two patients from the surgical group experienced frozen shoulder. More importantly, they highlighted that the PRP group had significantly faster recovery time, allowing for quicker restart of pain-free and full range of motion shoulder activity.
Nowadays, it is well established that PRP is superior to common treatments like cortisone injections for various conditions such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and osteoarthritis. These recent studies show that PRP can truly promote healing, as well as, it can provide surgical-level results without the associated risks.
